Holmewood
Holmewood began as homes for the workers at the Williamthorpe Colliery but, since the closure of the mine in 1970, it has become better known for the Five Pits Trail which runs through it. Today, Holmewood Ponds Nature Reserve is a haven for birdlife, butterflies and wildlife.
Explore the area on an audio trail and listen to interviews with local residents, countryside rangers and wildlife experts. Follow the history of Holmewood from the coal mines to the creation of the Great Central Railway (now a walking and cycling trail) and on to the restoration of the land right up to the present day. The route is just under 2 miles long and takes in part of the Five Pits Trail. Download the trail onto an MP3 player, iPod or mobile phone by clicking on the website link below.
